Gillen to USDOT Secretary Duffy: “Together, we can all save lives.”
WASHINGTON, DC - This week, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04), a Member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, spoke directly with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy during T&I’s annual oversight hearing. Rep. Gillen addressed the urgent need to address the dangerous conditions on Long Island’s roads. She highlighted the alarming rate of serious crashes in the region and pressed Secretary Duffy to prioritize federal support for infrastructure upgrades, improved traffic safety measures, and stronger enforcement of existing laws. See highlights below:
Earlier this year, Congresswoman Gillen sent a letter to Secretary Duffy urging increased funding to help reduce traffic fatalities and prevent accidents on Long Island and across the nation. At Wednesday’s hearing, Secretary Duffy affirmed his commitment to working closely with Rep. Gillen to advance initiatives that will make Long Island roads safer for everyone.

New York’s Fourth Congressional District is home to TRACON N90, the air traffic control facility, which oversees the busiest and most complex airspace in our country. Secretary Duffy agreed to join Congresswoman Gillen for a visit to N90 to see first-hand the need for investment and modernization.

In 2021, Congress passed the bipartisan HALT Drunk Driving Law to require new vehicles to include lifesaving anti‑drunk‑driving technology, but the previous Administration failed to implement this law by the statutory deadline. More than four years later, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) still has not issued the final rule, which once finalized, could help save more than 10,000 lives a year. Rep. Gillen raised the need to act on this urgent matter and Secretary Duffy agreed to ensure the US Department of Transportation implements the law.
