Gillen Statement on H.R. 22
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) released the following statement after voting against H.R. 22:
"It is my position that only American citizens should vote in American elections. I oppose any effort to allow noncitizens to vote in any American election. To be clear, it is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in Federal elections and making a false claim of citizenship is punishable by removal from the United States.
"H.R. 22 is not designed to maintain the accuracy of our voter rolls. Instead, it is designed to make it harder for American citizens, including our servicemembers deployed overseas and married women who changed their last names, to vote in our elections. I reject the GOP’s disgraceful attempt to disenfranchise American citizens."
