Gillen: Long Island needs lower costs, not another tax hike for consumers

April 3, 2025

GARDEN CITY, NY – Today, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) released the following statement after reporting emerged showing that the Administration’s proposed trade policy would raise household costs by $7300 for American families annually:

“My number one priority in Congress is bringing costs down and cutting taxes for Nassau County’s working families. My constituents already face a cost-of-living crisis: Long Islanders can’t afford a reckless trade war that raises prices on cars, clothes, groceries, and everyday goods. The Administration’s misguided import taxes are already devastating our economy: the stock market is in free-fall, seniors’ hard-earned retirement plans are being wiped away, and experts are warning we’re headed towards a recession.

“These across-the-board tax hikes will drain families’ bank accounts and small businesses’ bottom lines if left unchecked. The President should reverse these chaotic, irresponsible tariffs and work with Congress to bring costs down for hardworking Americans. It is only with cooperation between the Administration and Congress that we can create durable policies that grow our economy. I'll work with anyone interested in doing that."
