Gillen Introduces Amendment to Reconciliation Package That Would Restore Full SALT Deduction; Fulfill President’s Promise to “Get SALT Back”

May 20, 2025
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) introduced an amendment to House Republicans’ reconciliation package that would eliminate any limitation on the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction, which was capped at $10,000 as part of the 2017 GOP tax bill. Gillen’s amendment would fulfill the President’s pledge to “get SALT back”, which he made during a trip to New York’s Fourth Congressional District in 2024.

“Last year, the President came to my district and promised to ‘get SALT back’. My amendment to the GOP tax bill would fulfill that promise,” said Congresswoman Gillen. “Cutting taxes by restoring the full SALT deduction is a critical concern for my constituents, who pay some of the highest taxes in the country. I will continue to explore every possible option to lower taxes and make life more affordable for Long Islanders.”

“I want applaud Congresswoman Gillen for helping to keep SALT on the front burner.  We need to keep the pressure on to encourage or colleagues on the other side of the aisle who have pledged to not vote for any tax bill that does not restore the SALT deduction. Long Island and Queens residents should not be taxed on state and local taxes they have already paid,” said Congressman Tom Suozzi, Co-Chair of the SALT Caucus. “It’s about basic fairness.”

“In 2017, the Red Moocher States jammed through the Tax Hike Bill that gutted the SALT deduction and hit hardworking middle-class Jersey families with a massive tax increase,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer, Co-Chair of the SALT Caucus. “Now, the Moocher Red Staters are only offering crumbs to families who are starving for relief from higher prices — a weak attempt to clean up the mess that Donald Trump created. I’ve been fighting since day one to fully restore the SALT deduction and cut taxes for Jersey families, and I’m proud to help lead this amendment with my colleagues to do just that.”

Gillen is joined on the amendment by Reps. Tom Suozzi (NY-03), Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05), Jerrold Nadler (NY-12), Pat Ryan (NY-19), Josh Riley (NY-18), Gregory Meeks (NY-05), Ritchie Torres (NY-15), Dan Goldman (NY-10), Tim Kennedy (NY-26), John Mannion (NY-22), and Brad Schneider (IL-10).

Long Island's small business and economic development organizations recently penned a letter to the Long Island delegation underscoring the importance of repealing the SALT cap in making Long Island more affordable and boosting the regional economy.
