Rep. Gillen Visits FDNY Headquarters

Rep. Gillen and FDNY Commissioner Tucker
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — This week, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) visited the headquarters of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and met with FDNY Commissioner Tucker to discuss securing critical federal funding for equipment, training and life-saving resources to support local firefighters.
“Our first responders embody courage and selfless service,” said Rep. Gillen. “We owe it to them to provide the resources, protections and recognition they have earned. I will continue to fight in Congress to ensure our firefighters and emergency personnel are never left behind.”
Gillen has been a steadfast advocate for first responders, consistently supporting local firefighters in Nassau County and fire departments across Long Island. Since taking office, Gillen has led multiple key pieces of legislation aimed at honoring, protecting, and providing resources for the local firefighters and volunteers:
H.R.1610 – FIRE Cancer Act of 2025: Expands access to cancer-related benefits and screenings for firefighters exposed to carcinogens on the job.
H.R. 2279 – No Tax on No Tax on Length of Service Award Programs Act: Raises the tax exemption from gross income for qualified payments to individuals providing volunteer firefighting or emergency medical services.
H.R.1410 – 9/11 Responder and Survivor Health Funding Correction Act of 2025: Ensures long-term funding for the World Trade Center Health Program, which provides critical health care for 9/11 first responders and survivors.
H.R.2257 – National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Coin Act: Authorizes the minting of commemorative coins to honor the sacrifice of fallen firefighters and support the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
In addition to her legislative efforts, Rep. Gillen has actively supported federal grant programs that strengthen local fire departments. She encouraged departments across NY-04 to apply for the FY2025 FEMA Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant, which provides funding to help departments increase and maintain the number of trained firefighters available in Nassau County.
