Gillen Blasts Administration Decision to Rescind TPS Extension for Haitians
GARDEN CITY, NY – Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) released the following statement urging the Administration to reverse its decision to rescind the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) extension for nearly 500,000 Haitians currently legally residing in the United States under protected status.
“The Administration’s abrupt decision to end Temporary Protected Status for all Haitians escaping horrific violence who have lawfully come to the US after thorough vetting and background checks is dangerous and cruel.
"This decision will have a devastating impact for the large Haitian American community on Long Island, tearing hard-working, law-abiding Haitian families apart and sentencing some of our neighbors who contribute to our economy to what may be tantamount to a death sentence due to the ongoing gang violence and political turmoil in Haiti. I urge my colleagues in Congress to join my efforts to persuade the Administration to reconsider this action.”
